AMERICAN EXPRESS EMPLOYEE FINANCIAL PLANNING

Desert Ridge Is One of Amex's Biggest Campuses. Its Benefits Deserve a Local Guide.

Thousands of American Express employees work at the Desert Ridge campus in north Phoenix, with a clean 6% match, a pension frozen since 2007 that long-timers still hold, after-tax contribution room, and a Restoration Plan waiting for higher earners. I help Amex people put those pieces in the right order.

The Match Is Simple. The Layers Above It Are Not.

The Retirement Savings Plan

Amex matches 100% of your before-tax and Roth contributions up to 6% of total pay, per the company's benefits guide, and plan filings show the average match landing near $7,000 per participant. Six percent is the floor; anything less returns compensation to the company.

Plan filings have also permitted after-tax contributions up to 10% of eligible pay. Whether today's plan supports converting those dollars to Roth in-plan is not publicly documented, so confirm the conversion mechanics in your materials; if available, it is meaningful extra tax-free capacity, and you can project what the full contribution stack builds either way.

The Frozen Pension and the Restoration Layer

The Amex defined benefit plan froze in July 2007. If your tenure reaches back that far, you hold an accrued benefit with an irrevocable election at retirement, worth modeling years early rather than in the exit-paperwork rush.

Higher earners meet the Retirement Restoration Plan: it restores the match on pay above the IRS compensation limit in exchange for deferring salary or bonus. Restored dollars are an unsecured promise from Amex under Section 409A, with locked distribution elections, so the decision is about creditor exposure and tax timing, not just the match. For directors and VPs with RSUs layered on top, the concentration math belongs in the same conversation; my concentration framework applies to AXP like any other ticker.

The Desert Ridge campus sits on 94 acres in north Phoenix and hosts one of the largest American Express workforces anywhere, spanning technology, servicing, and operations roles. Different roles, same homework: capture the match, sequence the layers above it, and put the pension election (if you hold one) on a timeline.

Plan terms referenced on this page are current as of July 2026; confirm the specifics with your benefits administrator. Match, after-tax, Restoration, pension: four layers, one order.

Bring your Retirement Savings Plan statement and, if you have them, your Restoration Plan election and pension estimate. I'll sequence the layers for your bracket and your dates.
